November 29th, 2009 - Four Prayer Requests

I have four prayer requests for those of you who are prayer partners with this ministry.  We believe that God hears and answers the prayers of His people and that nothing is impossible with Him.

First, I would appreciate prayers for my wife, Peggy.  She has been struggling with an infection in her feet for four years, and is also struggling with neuropathy.

Second, a friend of the ministry named Sylvester is in need of prayer for some physical concerns.  He has not felt well for quite some time and is under a doctor’s care.

Third, a friend named Gene has been suffering from headaches for quite some time.  He also is seeking prayer.

Finally, be in prayer for a friend named Ulysses.  He has recently been released from prison and is having difficulty finding a job.

Thanks for your prayers.

November 25th, 2009 - A Little Self-Discipline, Please

No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. – 1 Corinthians 9:27

How many of us hinder ourselves from receiving the fullness of God’s blessing simply by lack of self-discipline?  I admit that I, for one, all too often am guilty of this.

Paul is not speaking about literally beating oneself here; rather, he is talking about self-discipline.  He is saying that we need to discipline ourselves so that we do nothing in excess. Doing nothing in excess will qualify us for God’s best blessings.  We will be able to minister longer and much more effectively, we will be better witnesses to others, and we will be much happier and healthier believers if we will exercised a little self-discipline in our lives.

Prayer:  Father, You know that tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day in the United States and that many of us tend to not discipline ourselves at the dinner table.  Help us to be mindful of this verse and to remember that we are disciplining ourselves because You loved us enough to sacrifice Your Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, for our salvation.

November 23rd, 2009 - A Matter of Priority

The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. – 1 John 2:17

I fear that we become so caught up in life that we forget what it’s all about.  We want to earn more money, climb the business ladder, have more stuff.  In reality, there is nothing wrong with more money, more possessions, and success in our employment.  The problem arises when these desires take priority in our lives.

Our problem is that sometimes the desires of this world consume us so much that we forget that life is about pleasing God and walking according to His will.  The money, possessions, and successes of this world will all fade away, but doing the will of God will hold value for us long past the end of this life.

Prayer:  Father, help me to have eternal values, and not the values of this world.

November 21st, 2009 - The Focus of Our Prayers

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. – Philippians 2:3-4

It is easy to become so concerned about ourselves that we seldom think about the concerns or burdens of others.  We tell other people, “I’ll pray for you,” but do we remember to do that?  We tell others, “If there’s anything you ever need me to do, just let me know,” but do we ever check with them again?

Our prayers are too often selfish – all about us.  We are needy people, and need to pray for our own needs; after all, Jesus said, “Give us today our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11).  But we should never be so consumed with ourselves and our needs that we forget others.  In fact, the primary focus of our prayers should be on others and not on ourselves.

Prayer:  Father, help me to stop being so self-centered in my prayers and to pray for others far more than I pray for myself.  IN Jesus’ Name.  Amen.

November 19th, 2009 - The Most Important Preparation for Preaching

Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. – 1 Peter 4:10-11A

The primary gift the Holy Spirit gives to me is preaching – proclaiming the Word of God. This passage reminds me that the most important part of exercising my gift is to spend time with God so that I know above all else that the messages I proclaim are God’s specific words ministering His grace to a specific group of people at the specific time I am speaking to them.

Studying is important, and preparing the message is important. But, if I am to properly exercise the gift God has given me, the primary task is to make sure that I spend time in prayer seeking His specific message.

Prayer: Father, help me to never forget that the most important preparation for preaching is spending time with You.
