December 29th, 2009 - A New Mind For A New Year

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. – Romans 12:2

We’re counting down the final days of 2009 and eagerly anticipating 2010!  Some of us are excited about the potential of the new year and the new decade!  But a new year and a new decade will doubtless bring many challenges to some of us.  A new year can be a time to make a fresh commitment to the Lord!

I believe that God has a perfect plan for each of us.  It is our job, according to today’s Scripture, to allow our minds to be renewed so that we can be transformed and able to walk in that perfect plan.

Let us commit to having our minds renewed for 2010.  Let’s spend time in the Word of God and begin to think the thoughts of God, given to us by His Spirit through His words!  Cultivate a new mind for a new year!

December 25th, 2009 - The Twelve Days of Christmas – Day 12

Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord.- Luke 2:11

The first announcement of Jesus’ birth was given by an angel to shepherds.  Shepherds were considered the most common folks of all.  They had no special gifts or abilities, and they certainly had no money.

It was to these individuals – the most common of the common and the most ordinary of the ordinary – that the angel of the Lord announced that a Savior had been born!  The message is clear – no matter who you are and no matter what you’ve done, a Savior was born.

Jesus is that Savior.  He came so that your sins could be forgiven through His shed blood on Calvary’s cross.  He lives today to have a relationship with you.  He doesn’t care if you’re intelligent or not, rich or not, talented or not.  He loves YOU!

If you don’t have a relationship with this Savior today, simply acknowledge that you are a sinner and that you believe that Jesus came, lived, died, and rose again for you.  Receive His forgiveness, His love, and His friendship today!  It will be the best Christmas Present you have ever received.

May God bless each of you who read this post and grant you the merriest and most blessed Christmas ever!

December 24th, 2009 - The Twelve Days of Christmas – Day 11

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. – Luke 2:6-7

This simple sentence speaks volumes to us.  God, after promising that a Savior would be born for around 4,000 years, kept His promise in the humble town of Bethlehem.  Jesus Christ was, indeed, born of a virgin, wrapped in cloths, and laid in a manger.

This Baby, the Son of God, would grow up to live a perfect life and to show the power of God to mankind.  Then He would die on a cruel Roman cross – His righteous blood providing forgiveness of sins to all who would receive this Gift.  Then He rose from the dead, and He still lives!  He lives at the right hand of God today, and, through His Spirit, He lives in the hearts of believers.  And, one day, He is coming again to rule and to reign over the Earth!

Do you believe in Him today?  If not, receive Him as the greatest Christmas Present ever given!!

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! – 2 Corinthians 9:15

December 23rd, 2009 - the Twelve Days of Christmas – Day 10

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. – Luke 2:1-5

We often skim over Luke 2:1-2.  They’re a part of the story, but do they really mean anything?

As a matter of fact, these verses are a crucial part of the story.  the prophet Micah had said that Jesus would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:20).  But Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth, a town about 80 miles north of Bethelehm.  How then could it be that the Son of God would be born in Bethlehem?

God used the vanity of Caesar Augustus to fulfill His promise.  Caesar ordered a registration for purposes of taxation.  The Jews had a custom that people must register in the hometown of their ancestors.

thus it was that Joseph, who was engaged to Mary, was required to go to Bethlehem for this registration.  And thus it was that Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem, just as the prophet had prophesied.

You see, God will keep His promises, no matter what.  Nothing can keep Him from being faithful to us.  Trust Him to keep His promises to you today!

December 22nd, 2009 - The Twelve Days of Christmas – Day 9

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. – Matthew 1:24

Let’s put ourselves in the place of Joseph.  he was engaged to be married to a young virgin named Mary.  Imagine Joseph’s shock, pain, and anger when Mary told him that she was pregnant.  Imagine his further devastation when she told him she was pregnant by the Holy spirit!

Joseph had three options.  Option 1 was to have Mary stoned to death.  In Bible times, anyone who was unfaithful during the engagement period could legally be put to death.

Option 2 was to quietly divorce Mary and let her fend for herself.  This option seemed more plausible for Joseph, because he was a righteous man and, from all appearances, he did love Mary.  He did not want to subject her to public disgrace.

Option 3 was to go ahead and take Mary as his wife.  This option was absolutely unthinkable!  After all, the child wasn’t his, and Mary had undoubtedly been unfaithful.

But an angel came on the scene.  Appearing to Joseph in a dream, the angel informed him that the Baby really did belong to the Holy Spirit.  The angel also told Joseph to take Mary home as his wife anyway.

Joseph showed faith and courage by obeying God.  After all, people would be “sure” that Joseph and Mary had rushed things a bit.  Yet Joseph valued the Word of God more than the thoughts of the people.  He showed faith and courage by choosing to be obedient, even if obedience cost him everything!

December 22nd, 2009 - Twelve Days of Christmas – Day 8

“For nothing is impossible with God.” – Luke 1:37

Imagine Mary’s utter shock when, unexpectedly, she was told that she, a virgin, was going to have a Child!  You don’t have to know much about biology to know that virgins cannot have chilcren.

However, when God comes on the scene to fulfill His will, all things are, indeed, possible.  The Holy Spirit came upon Mary, and she gave birth to the Son of God – the Savior of the world – Jesus Christ.

After being told that this was going to happen, Mary’s response was awesome.  ”I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” (Luke 1:38)

when God challenges us to trust Him to accomplish what seems to be impossible in our lives, may our response be the same as Mary’s.  May we say, “Here I am, Lord.  Work it out however You want to work it out.”
